first discovery of mid-inlay epoxy reinforcement due to breaking bridges in the backing veneer. this became the foundation of the technique i now use for intricate work
small pieces of sapele mahogany individually rotated to a radial pattern around the eye
first time with the epoxy sealing so i didn't think to wipe off the excess. ended up with the template sealed onto the veneer under a 1mm layer. had to attack it. sanding didnt work
but individual dremelling did, and left it with a pretty cool scaley look too (which was lost when flooded with epoxy)
very hard to capture the chatoyance on this piece; the individual scales catch the light at different times since all scales are unique rotations, but having such a direct light source for photography and filming results in reflections. took about a week to make this piece but feels like it opened the door to far more complicated and ambitious work.
