Empathy is a visitation, not a meeting. You visit a planet, survey the geology and weather, and then simulate how events would play out there.

J1 was unaware of his mask and thought everyone processed logic first; fixed their problems before processing emotions. This is because J1 was told he was normal.

J2 knows he's not normal, but he's also probably a bit closer so easier for mutual visitation. Easier to understand, and easier to find a mutually comfortable meeting point.

Regardless, this would all have been a lot easier if J1 had known about his divergence.
