Brain chemistry is everything. All acts of charity are to improve the brain chemistry of the recipient, maybe through things like food.
A good act is one where:
the intent
is to improve longitudinal brain chemistry
for the largest number of people
with yourself weighted as 1
So
intent is the important thing, even if the intent is to learn from an ignorant act
all acts of altruism are to improve the brain chemistry of others, but...
this means you are morally obliged to prioritise your own brain chemistry too
Longitudinal brain chemistry ensures you don't just go full-hedon.
Prioritising self ensures your well is not poisoned before you go sharing the water.
Run the numbers and you'll see that your family and doing good is still your priority. All other acceptable moral frameworks are derivative to this, but most neglect the individual.
