The basic premise behind all this is that religion was our original regulation.
Religions formed organically as a communal way to process emotions and overcome trauma. Every one of them has multiple forms of individual and group regulation which enable people to better process challenging things.
There will be some form of group chanting or singing. Possibly a holding of hands and a swaying; rhythmic actions which prime your dopaminergic tone to be receptive to reprogramming.
Then comes the linguistic programming itself: explanations and moral frameworks which improve your world and encourage you to improve that of others.
And finally some low stimulation regulation in the form of sitting meditation or prayer to bed it all in.
Religions popped up all over the world independent of each other but share these common themes. The churches and mosques and synagogues and temples are where we went to export our woes.
We would tell the priest ‘sorry father for I have sinned’, exporting a bit of our trauma of self. The father would compile a new narrative while kneading his rosary beads before settling in for intensive regulation to process the emotion he had absorbed.
Your shaman would come and he would dance and warble and invoke the spirits and channel the divine, and you would rock and sway and find yourself freed from the knot that had grown in your soul.
Your monk would mumble and intone while you sink into the rhythmic rumblings before melting and meditating and allowing the negativity to evaporate into the ether.
We have lost these regulation methods. I am trying to bring them back, without the dogma.
The idea is to take the regulation, take the reprogramming, and put it in the hands of the user.
To explain why these things work and why they are essential for our wellbeing.
To extract them from blind faith and provide logical reasoning that makes people believe, because confidence in the process is essential for it to work.
I am extracting the religious devkit so that you can hack your own soul.
I think the autistic folks of old would have been the priests. The ones who look at emotions logically and help others to navigate them. Not unempathetic; a different kind of empathetic.
But putting that aside, we need regulation.
These methods sprang up all over the world without a common root. Rhythmic movements, vocalisations, meditations. They are instinct, used to reprogram your reality so you can live in a better world.
Here we are, with all our material problems solved yet feeling worse than ever.
Maybe it’s because we solved the problem of god and killed him in the process.
But we don’t need god. We just need his tools and a map.
