I will try to summarise the install process of these mods here. This is the first time I am trying to quantify it so it will need refinement, and it is obviously simplified.
Encoding level depends on evolutionary priority:
physical threat = +100
personal advancement (sex, shelter, food, dominance) = +10
community, being liked, helping others = 1
This is the equivalent phasic dopamine response that carries the salience of the memory and programs it into your cmem. You cmem has a limited capacity, and things are overwritten and removed according to salience.
Cmem is separate to other forms of memory. Cmem is your volition action - it is the filters you have on the world. This is where your brain chooses which 0.0005% of your sense data you actually get to experience, and it happens pre-cognition. It is shaped by memory but it is not memory.
Cmem is your mods.
A simple example would be that if you watch horror movies all day you start looking over your shoulder. But that’s so surface-level it’s almost trite.
The real thing is looped thoughts. This is where we install mods.
Physical threat, or the threat of losing something you feel like you need, will result in you replaying and imagining and catastrophising and bitching. You will latch on to this idea and you will install it through repetition.
We are not computers; we are flesh, and flesh takes time to adapt. Each time you mentally repeat a formation like ‘he insulted me’, you are physically installing it further into the flesh of your brain, and when you go to bed it will be consolidated and become part of your world the next time you wake up.
So someone mugs you. That is a big +1000 right there and you’re unlikely to go down that alley again. The experience may be so traumatic that you never consciously look at it again, but that’s because the install process is already finished. You already got +1000 and need not repeat the code to get it in there.
But when someone insults you? That is a slight on your person; your dominance. Or when someone scams you out of some money? They are taking away your prosperity, your food, your shelter. This is a +10. How dare they.
But +10 alone isn’t enough for real learning, so you repeat it in your mind. You toy with it and examine it and each time you loop that thought, your mind is interacting with the mental object cased by the event. Each time you loop it you get an extra +10. If you do this enough you will end up with your +1000, go to bed, and wake up in a more hellish world where everyone is your enemy.
These are the deep valleys and gorges in your planet. They are caused by repeated dopaminergic responses to first external stimuli, sensed with the five external senses, and then internal stimuli, sensed with your sixth sense: your mind.
The mental repetition is the install process.
This is why gratitude journalling and ‘stopping to smell the flowers’ will not work for someone deeply traumatised. Their world is full of deep valleys. Addictions are like bottomless pits, all dug out by repeated dopaminergic responses to something or other. Trauma is the same - a bottomless pit, sometimes closed off to perception because of how deep it runs. Gratitude journalling is a scratch on a mountain.
