Best estimates say our reality has 11 dimensions, of which we perceive 4. Putting time to one side, we filter out an estimated 99.9995% of the data that hits our external senses from the 30% of realms accessible to us. 95% of the universe is dark matter and energy which cannot be measured with current instruments.
This means we maybe perceive a grand total of 0.0000075% of reality.
To say there is nothing else out there is… presumptuous.
So back to the age-old question: how do we go about finding god, the universal flow, nibbana, unfiltered reality?
We refine our sensing equipment.
Our sensing equipment is our brain.
We still do not understand how the brain works. It operates through vast networks of electrochemical activity built on quantum foundations, where fluctuations in electrons and fleeting quantum effects shape perception and thought. And that's just on our observable 4 dimensions.
People have been experiencing god, the universal flow, nibbana, zeus, vishnu, whatever, since the dawn of time. Many say that spirituality is not about the mind, but I respectfully disagree. You feel god in the heart? How? Palpitations?
What is happening is you are sensing something with your central nervous system, of which the brain is the controlling entity. The brain is sending a somatic manifestation of its processing to the vicinity of your heart.
Coming back to time: this dimension is subjective. You perceive time based on activity in the time cells of your hippocampus, which get their ‘ticks’ from how variable your dopamine is. The more variability, the more ticks, and the faster time goes. Enough stability and you might be in 'the eternal now’, but nobody else would ever know.
The priest and his congregation are honing their mental faculties so that they can better perceive reality; perceive some tiny extra sliver on top of our usual 0.0000075%. The priest will meditate and pray while the congregation sing and sway, and they all become more chemically receptive to reality. They become more empty and more focused and more regulated.
Advanced meditators can influence their endocrine systems almost at will. They can slow down time by stabilising dopamine, induce states of bliss by increasing serotonin, and more. These things literally change your reality.
But how can you perceive god?
Part of it is dialling up sensitivity through sharpening your instrument, and the other part is releasing the junk in your brain so that reality can flow through it.
The emptier you are, the more you can be filled with the moment. How do you hope to experience the divine while thinking about when to sell your crypto?
Forget all that. Focus the mind and rev those neurotransmitters. Practice makes perfect.
God is right here right now. Nibbana. The all-seeing-eye. Quezacotl. Mr Blobby. Whatever. You do you.
God is the eyes of your child, but only when you can actually look. God is that sick bassline while you stuff a fistful of sweets into your glycogen depleted face and feel your hairs stand on end as your thighs surge with energy. God is the roses and the sun and the sweat dripping down your flank in the sauna.
But you have to polish the sword of your mind. This is what the priests and the shamans spend their time doing. Regulating. Renouncing. Unlearning.
When you experience a moment of pure reality it will utterly blow your mind. It is too much. You cannot reside there. Nibbana. Floating wing-eye-angel-monsters. Shiva come to destroy your delusions. A ship on the other side of the galaxy that hosts the simulation of our world and has quantum entangled with you so the entire reality we live in manifests within your body. That last one was mine.
It will blow everything you thought you knew out of the water and you will never be the same again. You will return to the container of self but never again will you 'be' the self.
And here's the kicker: even if your own encounter was empirically shown to be false, it wouldn't matter. Because you have seen. You have seen just how incontrovertibly intertwined with everything in this vast unknowable reality you really are.
Your existential woes; your ego-driven actions; they will start to melt like stale spring snow.
