drugs

My family and probably every other adhd family has a weird relationship with substances. Not surprising considering about a quarter of them have died thanks to self-medicating undiagnosed mental health conditions.

Drugs are great. Alcohol is not. Let’s just say that: alcohol is shit and will kill you. If alcohol does it for you, try valproate instead; it’ll give you your gaba. I would be dead if I hadn’t stopped drinking 5 years ago.

Cannabis is fantastic. It increases wellbeing, sure, but the dopaminergic effects are genuinely therapeutic. It slows down my speech so others can better follow, and it increases dopaminergic tone for already-rewarding activities.

Aripiprazole feels a lot like a speedy pill in that it’s hitting the dopamine (speed) and serotonin (mdma) receptors, and this is a good thing. Speed is methamphetamine which is what they use to treat adhd, and mdma was the daddy of all antidepressants.

Psychedelics… I love mushrooms. Shame they’re hard to get. Every time I have them I feel great for 6 months afterward, like I’ve had a big mental poo.

The harder stuff I would avoid. Cocaine I tried several times and felt nothing, which was a huge red flag. If you are going into cocaine and meth, please go to a doctor. They can prescribe things with the same effect, it will be clean, it will be cheap, you wont die.

And then there’s all the internal drugs from exercise, diet, yoga, etc. We don’t call those drugs though, do we?
